Meet the Solingen, a knife block with no slots.
It is a slab of solid acacia standing on a wide base, with magnets hidden inside the wood. Knives hang flat against either face. There is nowhere for crumbs to collect and no groove to blunt an edge. Named after the German town that has made knives for seven hundred years.
Both sides
The magnets run through the block, so it holds knives on the front and the back. Up to ten on a footprint 23.5cm wide and 10cm deep.
Wood, and a felt foot
Acacia is dense and closes its grain, which is why it is used for chopping boards. The base has a felt pad, so it stays put and does not mark a worktop.

How many knives does it hold?
Up to ten, five on each face, depending on the width of the handles.
Will the magnets damage the blades?
No. The magnets are inside the wood, so the blade rests against acacia. There is no slot to dull the edge either.

No. It is the block only.
