Meet the Helmsley, a candle holder that is simply a block of stone.
It is a solid brick of creamy travertine, 12cm long and 8cm tall, with two slots cut into it that each take a taper candle. The slots are open at the front, so the candle slides in from the side. There is no metal cup, no base and no join. The stone holds the candle and that is the whole idea.
Travertine is full of small open pores, and here they are left visible rather than filled. Each block is cut from a different part of the stone, so the pitting and the depth of the cream tone shift from one to the next.
A mantel, a table, a windowsill
Two tall candles in a low, heavy block is a classic shape. It sits in the middle of a dining table without blocking the view across it, and it holds a mantel or a sideboard on its own. Two of them at either end of a long table look better still.
Stone that weighs something
At around 800g it has real presence in the hand, and it does not tip. It belongs with the Farrow vases and the Cheltenham, and with the Ashby tray and the Inglecote wall light in the same travertine.

What candles fit it?
Standard taper candles, the kind sold for dinner tables. The slots are open at the front, so the candle slides in rather than pushing down. Candles are not included.
Does wax damage the stone?
Let any drips cool and set, then lift them off. Travertine is porous, so wipe rather than soak, and avoid coloured candles if you want the stone to stay pale.
Will it look exactly like the photos?
Close, but not identical. Every block is cut from a different part of the stone, so the pores and the cream tone vary.
How much is delivery?
