Meet the Ashby, an oval tray cut from a single block of travertine.

The face is honed smooth, the edge rises into a shallow lip, and the whole thing is one piece of creamy stone. Drop your keys in it by the door, keep rings and a watch on it beside the bed, or set a bar of soap on it at the basin. It does the quiet job of giving small things a home.

Travertine is full of small open pores, and here they are left visible rather than filled. Each tray is cut from a different part of the block, so the pattern of pitting and the depth of the cream tone shift from one to the next.

Where it earns its place

At 25cm long it is big enough for a set of keys and a phone, and slim enough to sit on a narrow shelf. On a dining table it holds salt, oil and a folded napkin. On a dressing table it takes the perfume bottles that otherwise scatter.
